In the early 1900s, China is engulfed in turmoil. The nation is fractured by internal conflicts, its people are suffering from hunger, and new political changes have exacerbated the situation rather than improved it. The Qing Dynasty, with a seven-year-old emperor and his formidable mother, Empress Dowager Longyu, at the helm, is disconnected from reality after two and a half centuries of unchallenged rule. Huang Xing, having just returned from Japan where he learned modern military strategies, is compelled to take up arms as he witnesses his homeland disintegrating.
